School Council

August 29, 2019

To all parents and guardians of students at Almonte and District High School,

As last year’s school council Chair I would like to welcome you to (or back to) ADHS. I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to school council and encourage you to consider using this venue to share your voice.

School council is a wonderful way to keep abreast of what is happening at the school, but more importantly it has a very specific purpose.  “The purpose of school council is, through the active participation of parents, to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”  (Ontario Regulation 612/00). Through the active participation of parents/guardians over the past few years we have

·         Organized a diversity themed community evening, featuring TedX speaker Dr. Sheema Khan.

·         Collaborated with CPHS to host TedX speaker Paul Davis in a social media awareness night.

·         Used school council funds to support clubs and various departments within the school.

·         Challenged the school to consider not just graduation rates but the success of students post-graduation.

·         Organized an event focused on mental health featuring psychology experts and community supports.

·         Started a lending library in the school office specifically for parents/guardians with a range of recommended books.

All of this happened as a direct result of the partnership between school council, administration, staff and the school board.  A dedicated school council can really make a difference.

This year the school council has a lot of other opportunities for improvement and topics of discussion, such as

·         What do we want ADHS to look like over the next few years?  What programs do we want to promote?

·         What can we do to help prepare our children for life post-graduation?

·         How do we help our student not only graduate, but excel?

·         How can we strengthen the school’s relationship with the greater Almonte community and keep the lines of communication open?

·         How do we foster a culture of inclusiveness and acceptance?

·         How do we prepare for the next Accommodation Review?

These are just some of the topics that may be addressed.  Other questions or concerns are always welcome, whether you are a parent, guardian, community member or student.

Becoming a school council member is a way to keep up-to-date on changes and events at the local, board and ministry level that will affect our school.  For those looking for a bigger picture, there is also a Family of Schools Council which includes all the schools in the Mississippi Mills and Carleton Place area.

ADHS School Council meetings are typically held from 6:30-7:30 pm on the first Monday of every month in the Learning Commons at ADHS.  The first meeting this year however, will be held September 16th (6:30 pm) to allow for students, staff and parents to settle into a routine.  Potential members will need to fill out a self-nomination form which is available in the school office or at the first meeting.

This is a great opportunity to be involved with life at ADHS.  I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Simone Norman
